The aim was to make it as easy possible, to keep them safe and make sure there was good visual progress to follow. "I have had no reports of any complications. In one case, there was slight swelling and were minor bruising around the edges but not to a significant degree. "Usually, these cases get easier as the condition resolves and symptoms settle. These patients did just that." While the surgical procedure is highly effective at achieving the objective of improving vision some people, Dr Furlong explained that many cases such as Ms Ndinya's have been unsuccessful for another reason. "It is not often that you achieve a positive outcome in that situation," he explained. "You might not want to have a negative image of the condition, and it could not be covered on an eye sheet [for example], so some have opted not to surgery at all." "I would recommend the first visit of any symptoms that women are having with some type of visual problem to a specialist with thorough history of the woman's vision, and her diet habits to rule out other diseases or that could the cause them." "They need to go see a specialist if it affects their vision. They don't want any change to their diet or any medicines, but they do need to have their vision examined, because at the moment gastroparesis is such a poorly understood condition," he added. Dr Trewin, an ophthalmologist himself, confirmed that he would also advise women to have their vision examined if they are having visual symptoms such as double vision or blurred lines in the field of vision. "A good first point is to go and see a specialist with your vision - preferably one with a good track record of diagnosing these kind problems," he said. "The first visit is really important because then you can have a second one after that if you decide gastroparesis is the cause"
